Historical anecdotes
The Di Vino cellar located in the hotel's lower lobby level, was originally part of the Diocletian Roman Thermal Baths. As you decent the spiral stairs case you will immediately see part of the Tiepidarium wall on the far left, surrounded by the restored fresco motifs. The Diocletian Roman Thermal Baths are found in an area surrounding the hotel extending from the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli to as far as the Cinquecento square. The works were finished by the emperor Diocletian and was the grandest and most perfect example of a SPA building in the ancient world. Today, the Basilica represents a great example of a 16th Century conversion of ancient ruins into a then modern structure. Many of the actual buildings in this area include ancient remains of the Thermal baths such as the Church of San Bernardo, the great exedra or semi circular portico below the spherical buildings in the Piazza della Repubblica designed by architect Gaetano Koch in 1886 and the St. Regis Grand Hotel built by Cesar Ritz in 1894.
